New E-Com Districts
Portage Bay is pleased to announce that two additional Washington state school districts have recently chosen E-Com for their special education departments. Coupeville School District and Grand Coulee Dam School District both chose E-Com for its well known ease of use and the superior service and support provided by Portage Bay. E-Com is Portage Bay's Filemaker Pro based solution for helping special education departments manage their unique data management needs. For additional information about E-Com, please visit the E-Com area on our web site.

Portage Bay hires new developer
With six new districts choosing E-Com in the last six months and continued growth in demand for our Filemaker Pro, 4th Dimension, and osCommerce services, we recently added a new staff member. Kate Wheeler joined the firm in early November and will primarily be assisting with Filemaker Pro development projects and E-Com support.

osCommerce Sites Launched
We have recently launched two new ecommerce sites based on the open source project, osCommerce. R/C Modelsport sells kits, parts, and supplies for the remote control car hobbyist. Stampin in the Rain sells craft rubber stamps and supplies. Both sites involved customization of the basic osCommerce installation to suit the specific needs of our clients in areas such as alternate payment and shipping modules, customized graphics, and better image handling. Stampin in the Rain is using our 4th Dimension based osCommerce tool for easier management of the osCommerce inventory database.

The Heritage Institute
For over 25 years, The Heritage Institute has offered continuing education classes to educators around the northwest. A 4th Dimension database has been a key part of their success in managing classes and registrations. Portage Bay is currently assisting The Heritage Institute in updating their 4D version 6.7 database to the current version of 4D, 4D 2004. Following the 4D 2004 upgrade, the database will be enhanced to allow sending of registration documents via email as PDF attachments rather than by US Mail. In addition, we will be implementing new features in the database to enable it to automatically upload class changes to the Heritage Institutes web based scheduling system.

Washington State Ferry Weather
Many web sites offer weather information, but the Washington State Department of Transportation offers a useful twist on weather: real time temperature and wind direction information transmitted from the ferries as the ply their way across Puget Sound. Check this out on the Ferry Weather Page.

Somewhat similar wind and temperature information is available at other sites for other parts of the country ( San Francisco Bay for example).
