Support Program Enhancements Members of Portage Bay’s support program will benefit from two new enhancements to our core 4th Dimension database suite. A new bar coding module implements bar codes natively within the database, rather than relying on bar code fonts. This eliminates the cost of bar code fonts and eliminates the support hassles associated with making sure all computers have the appropriate bar code fonts. A new upgrade module will help ensure smoother transtitions when our clients upgrade to newer versions of their applications.
Current Portage Bay Projects
4th Dimension driven web content Portage Bay recently assisted Playnetwork, Inc with a rush project involving 4th dimension’s web services and web server capability. Web services is a popular tool for exchanging data between different applications. In Playnetwork’s case, we used web services to facilitate integration between the 4th Dimension system and a new accounting system.
4D’s built in web server is now in use at Playnetwork to provide information from the 4D database to users who do not have access to the traditional 4D Client application. The customer service department now obtains important client information via their web browsers directly from 4D Web Server.
Interesting Technologies
Boot Camp & Parallels Apple Computer recently released an interesting new software option for Mac OS X called 'BootCamp'. This software allows the new Macintosh systems based on Intel microprocessors to boot into either Mac OS X or Windows. The ability to dual boot a Macintosh is seen by some as a major advantage. The current version of this software does not allow the two operating systems to run concurrently. The user must choose which operating system to use at startup and each operating system resides on its on hard drive partition. A 3rd party product available at http://www.parallels.com/ enables hot switching between the Windows and Mac environments.
