New FileMaker Release
We are excited to announce the release of the latest line of FileMaker products - FileMaker Pro 12 and FileMaker Go 2.0 for the iPad or iPhone.
FileMaker 12 and Go 2.0 come with a slew of enhancements and new features. Below is a summary of the more useful ones.
FileMaker Pro 12
- Improvements to document and image storage: Options to specify encryption and storage location of container fields. There is also a new tool that will transfer existing container data to a new location.
- Plugin updating: Overhaul of how plugins are deployed and updated. These changes make it easy to integrate external plugins with FileMaker solutions.
- Custom window styles: Enhanced window management allows creation of custom pop-up dialog windows and document windows.
- Layout design tools: Built in layout design themes, gradient tool, and screen stencils designed for different standard desktop resolutions as well as for the iPhone and iPad.
- New chart types: Four new types of charts will be supported: Stacked bar, positive/negative column, scatter, bubble.
FileMaker Go 2.0 for the iPad or iPhone
- FileMaker Go is now FREE!
- Location services: Determines current location and stores this information in the database. Current position can be obtained by GPS, cell or wifi.
- Store music, photos, and more: Ability to insert audio, signatures, photos, music, or files in the database. The feature also allows the use of the device's camera to insert a photo on the fly.
- Export files/images and records: Direct export enables emailing or saving files and images from the device. This version also allows custom export of database records similar to FileMaker Pro. Export output formats include xlsx, doc, html, csv.

4D Releases Version 13
Here at Portage Bay it seems like just yesterday that 4D v12 was released, but time waits for no one, and so it is that 4th Dimension v13 was released this past month. With the release of v13, all releases prior to v12 are officially sunsetted. This means there will be no patches or updates released for 4D v11, 4D 2004, or any earlier releases. While it is unlikely that there will be immediate problems with these earlier versions, users of 4D versions earlier than v12 will want to be planning for an upgrade.
4D v13 introduces some great new features:
- The new web server engine is multi-threaded to provide even faster and more scalable access for web users.
- The 4D Client application now has an integrated Webkit web browser for completely seamless cross-platform embedded web content in your database.
- The 4D programming language has had many new commands added to make programming 4D apps faster and easier for developers.
- The 4D grid tool, the ListBox, has been significantly enhanced, making it even more rare that you need to use external tools for data grids. I’m particularly excited about the ability to control vertical size and alignment of row data.

With the close of 2011, we are winding down one of the larger FileMaker 11 upgrade projects that we have had the pleasure to work on. The
FileMaker has recently announced the official sunset of the FileMaker 9 product family. As of September 27, 2012 FileMaker 9 products will no longer be officially supported and upgrades from FileMaker 9 will no longer be available. 
Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant, is by far the most impressive feature of the iPhone 4S. Out of the box, Siri is programmed to assist with all sorts of tasks: place phone calls, schedule meetings, give the forecast, map directions, and much more. I’ve used Siri to search for coffee shops close by and dictated text messages without having to unlock the phone. Just ask Siri "What can you do?" to get full list of her capabilities.

We are always interested in finding out about time saving tools for web and database development. We recently decided to try out 
Apple Computer recently released the newest major update to the Macintosh operating system, Mac OS X 10.7, also known as Mac OS X Lion. The new release makes a little work for FileMaker and 4th Dimension users. FileMaker Pro 11v4 was just released in early August to deal with some minor incompatibilities with the new Mac OS. Unfortunately, both 4D v11 and 4D v12 are essentially unusable on the new Mac OS X. Both experience intermittent crashing problems.
Recently an audiovisual equipment rental company requested a way to integrate their FileMaker solution with iCal/Google. The goal was to show event reservations in iCal or Google Calendar.
FileMaker released a new version of FileMaker Go, the application used for accessing databases on the Phone and iPad, with some exciting new features. The four features below can help save time, increase productivity and take advantage of the power of accessing your database on a mobile device.
For a number of years I simply used the earphones that my phone came with, but last year I acquired a set of earphones with noise canceling circuitry. I’m not sure how much difference the noise cancellation makes, but the in-ear foam earbuds are excellent. It’s like having your very own cone of silence (if you’ll pardon the outdated cultural reference). They completely seal the ear canal and dramatically improve how well I can hear people on the other end of the line. The foam degrades over time, so you do have to replace the foam sleeves every couple of months, but the cost for the replacement sleeves is reasonable.
FileMaker has always been good at creating printed reports, but in a recent project we're working on at the Washington State Department of Transportation, we've been getting a chance to test the limits.
This month’s FileMaker tip is on creating summarized spreadsheet reports directly in browse mode in FileMaker. New in FileMaker 11, this feature allows you to easily set up a report similar to Microsoft Excel, where you can group and summarize information in table view simply by right-clicking on any column header.

Portage Bay Solutions recently completed a FileMaker Go for iPhone application integrated with a standard FileMaker database for Express Transport Services, a medical delivery company.
We’d like to welcome Kittitas and Richland school districts to the family of districts in Washington that use our FileMaker special education application, E-Com for Special Education. With these two new districts, we have 35 districts in Washington state using E-Com to manage special ed student information for over 13,000 special ed kids.
Smart phones are great devices, I know mine has become an indispensable component of my work day. in addition to my phone, I also routinely use a tablet device, mobile wifi modem, tablet, and laptop. All this electronic gear is underpowered by today's battery technology, in my opinion. Fortunately, there are many options for spare battery packs. I just recently purchased a compact external battery that will power any device that can charge via USB. It should extend the 3 hours of use I get from the mobile hotspot to a full day, or approximately double the time I can use the phone. Not a bad deal for $41.95. I purchased 
For this project we’re using the 4D Ajax Framework component to speed development. With this component, we’re able to create a highly interactive web interface to the 4D database relatively quickly.
