Keeping FileMaker Up to Date: Why Minor Releases Are Also Important

Minor releases enhance features and correct issues

For many people, software updates can seem like a nuisance. And for two good reasons:

  1. Releases can take time to download and install, costing valuable time, and
  2. If new or updated features are buggy, day-to-day workflow can be impacted.

As FileMaker developers, we try to stay on top of all releases, including the minor ones, to ensure the software development work we perform for our clients can take advantage of the latest features and correct any errant issues missed from a major release.

CAVEAT: Know the version your host server is running

Staying current is important. However, don’t upgrade the FileMaker version on your computer, iPad, or iPhone past what your server is running. Otherwise, you’ll hit a compatibility issue and won’t be able to log into your file.

If you or your clients connect to a host running FileMaker Server 2024 (v21) or earlier, wait to upgrade to FileMaker Pro 2025 (v22) until the host is also upgraded.

Your FileMaker version should generally be equal to – or occasionally a version older than – the server version.

Recent Claris FileMaker 2025 updates

Since the release of FileMaker 2025, Claris has released three minor updates: 22.01, 22.02, and 22.03.

We covered the 22.01 and 22.02 releases in three parts:

Version 22.01brought with it AI script steps and functions. While 22.02 addressed issues with Windows upgrades, conditional formatting, and Perform JavaScript in a Web Viewer.

The newest minor update, 22.03, fixes two Windows-related issues:

  • FileMaker Pro wouldn’t start after updating to version 22.0.2 using Help > Check for Updates.
  • When FileMaker Pro was upgraded to FileMaker Pro 2025 and the previous version was kept, checking for updates in the previous version appeared to upgrade but didn’t actually update the version.

Still using Claris Filemaker 2024?

For those still running FileMaker 2024, Claris released 21.1.3, which addresses the following issue:

  • FileMaker Pro now saves product information to a shared location instead of the Windows registry, eliminating the need for administrator privileges and preventing unnecessary User Access Control prompts when starting the application.

Stay updated for the best Claris Filemaker experience

We encourage everyone running either FileMaker 2025 (v22) or FileMaker 2024 (v21) to apply these minor updates to ensure the best experience for both you as the developer and your clients.
