As of November 2022, the Internet Explorer browser is no longer supported by the Google Maps API. If you are using FileMaker 18 the Map Widget may not work correctly, as the FM18 web viewer on Windows uses IE. Upgrading to FileMaker 19 should solve this issue.
Today we are announcing that we are now offering the Map Widget fully unlocked and free of charge! (download link below)
In September of 2018 we were excited to offer the Map Widget, a FileMaker solution that provided you with the ability to display your FileMaker data as locations on a Google Map, using the Google Maps clustering functionality. Implementation was easy and didn’t require in-depth knowledge of the Google Maps API. There were a few other solutions out at the time that offered similar functionality, but we knew ours could serve at least a handful of developers to provide an entry into working with Google Maps. At the time we charged a very nominal fee of $99 to recoup some of our development costs.
Since then, Claris FileMaker has embraced JavaScript more tightly. Solutions within the community, like Carafe.fm, have made implementing and accessing the Google Maps API even more accessible for FileMaker developers. With the barrier for entry becoming much easier to navigate, we have been steering developers who inquire about the Map Widget towards these other solutions.
We recognize that approaches change, and expanded ideas come along, and we are always eager to contribute to the growth of our community knowledge. In that vein, we have decided to stop selling the Map Widget and instead provide an unlocked copy, completely free of charge. Please feel free to download the file – and any of our other free add-ons & demos – to implement into your own solutions, or to use as a learning point for how we started working with FileMaker’s card window and Google Maps.
While making the solution free required some reworking, we wanted to be sure to honor those of you who have purchased the original Map Widget in the past. The new fully unlocked version can replace your locked and purchased versions. And with a “Full Access” account you can customize it as you wish and have full control over the map widget file.
