See Improved Performance In The Button Bar Portal Sort Header

**This post is an updated version of an earlier post that can be found here.**

The Button Bar Portal Sort Header gets better and better

We first released a demo and video about the Portal Sort Header back in 2016. Then last year we refactored the process a little to use JSON for variable passing. That change removed the need for any custom functions, and we updated the object names so they were easy to see in the left panel object viewer.

Today’s post announces further improvements we’ve made in response to comments that Chris took time to leave on last year’s blog post. Chris pointed out a typo and made recommendations for updating a field type and a multiplier in a calculation. Thank you, Chris, for your great observations. We appreciate it!

MULTI-FILE DEMO

The demo link below will take you to v2.0.10. We’re also reposting the text and links from the previous article, so you have all of the details in one spot.

NOTE: The demo will download as a zip file called Button Bar Portal Sort Version 2.0.10, but it will open as a folder called Version 2.0.10. Within the folder you will find a single and multi-file demo, as well as a data file.

What are sort headers and portal sort headers?

For  those of you not familiar with the previous portal sort headers, or if you don’t even know what sort headers are, you are in luck. We have created some easy to implement buttons in (button bars), that you can put above your portals (or rows in list views) to control sorting of the portal (or lists) by specific fields. It provides a nice user interface showing ascending, descending, and no sort states, as is commonly expected when sorting.

For the sorting, we use Kevin Frank’s technique as it is super fast and very efficient. Be sure to check out his three-part post about Portal Sorti. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Videos to assist with installation

In addition to refactoring the demos, we have also included two new videos to assist users.

Portal Sort Headers – How to Install

In this video we quickly walk through a basic installation process using our new demo file and a basic portal.

Portal Sort Headers – Under the Hood

In this video we look deeper into the mechanics of the Portal Sorting Header buttons. We look at each part to ensure you don’t get hung up when trying to implement or adjust them, and we also take a brief look at list sorting using the same buttons and script.
